Yes, with my broken Cantonese and people still thinks I am from HK.
My mother's first language is Cantonese but because my grandmother could speak Mandarin too so I never able to pick up the language.
The difference between having friends who would encourage you to speak the language versus friends who will make fun of your pronouciation does make a big difference.
Yes, it is true that my spoken Korean language is almost comparable or much better than my Cantonese. *double face palm*
